When Really is the Best Time to Visit Whistler?

Last of the evening Alpen Glow on Whistler Mountain.

Visiting Whistler is a big investment — so deciding when to come is a big decision!

Hopefully I can give you some insider knowledge on the best time to visit depending on what you actually want to get out of your trip.

Ski Season: End of November to End of April/May

Opening weekend (late November)

Traditionally, the mountain opens on American Thanksgiving weekend, though some years it's the weekend before or after. If snowfall has been light, opening day can be delayed — but the snowmaking team will be working hard to get something open on the hill.

This early in the season, and into the beginning of December, conditions can be hit and miss. You might score a great early-season snow day or you might find yourself on a very thin base.

Christmas

Whistler is magical at Christmas. The village is lit up, the energy is festive, and there's no shortage of things to do — but the skiing itself? Unpredictable.

Over my six Christmases in Whistler, I've only had two where the snow was the snow Whistler is famous for. Two others were okay. And two were barely skiable — one of those was the year my family came to visit! Very sad!

So from experience: come for Christmas if you love the atmosphere and the mountain town magic, and if there’s good skiing? It’s a bonus!

Best time for skiing: January, February, March

These are the months we hope — and generally expect — to deliver the best conditions. Living in the Coast Mountains, Whistler can be rainy and mild even in the middle of winter, and climate change has made it harder to predict which months will bring the goods. But if you're booking your trip around skiing, this is your safest window.

Traditionally, locals and guides will tell you late February and March are prime for powder — and March does tend to see some of the season's heaviest snowfall. But going off recent seasons, I wouldn't stake everything on any one month.

April

Cheaper rates, longer days, warmer temperatures — and possibly incredible skiing, or spring slush. You're rolling the dice a bit, but April can be a genuinely brilliant time to visit if you're open to whatever the mountain gives you.

Green Lake in Summer Time

Summer Season: Mid-June to Mid-September

Summer is my favourite time to be in Whistler. Blue sky days, warm temperatures, and the kind of energy that makes you want to be outside from morning until night If you're a summer person, Canada's west coast should absolutely be on your list.

One thing to keep in mind: this is also wildfire season. We can't predict it, but if you're worried about smoke and air quality, aim for earlier in July or late August rather than the height of summer in mid-July and August.

Bike Park: Mid-May to Early October

If you're a mountain biker, you already know the reputation of the Whistler Bike Park. Highlight of the season is Crankworx — a 10-day international mountain bike festival bringing together the best riders and biggest fans for racing and slopestyle competitions. Usually around end of July/beginning of August.

Best time to hike

Most of Whistler's best hiking is in the alpine, which means the trails need the snow to melt before they're safely accessible.

Depending on the season, that can mean trails don't open until early-mid July. If hiking is your priority, don't plan your trip before the start of July — and check trail conditions before you go. Always practice safe hiking ; hike within your means, take plenty of water, correct clothing & footwear, carry bear spray & pack it in, pack it out.

Golf

Courses in Whistler typically open in early June and close in early October, weather depending.

Best Time to Avoid Crowds: May/June & October/November

Traditionally the shoulder seasons, these months offer a quieter, cheaper Whistler.

Be mindful that some businesses, including the mountain (including sightseeing!) do close. However, hotel rates drop significantly, It is a great time for spa and wellness escapes at Scandinave Spa or some of the other spas in Whistler.

If you're not chasing skiing or hiking and just want to be in the mountains without the buzz of peak season, this is worth considering.
